Ready to Rent BC was founded by a group of citizens and service-related agencies in the Victoria region that came together to find solutions for unstably housed and homeless families. Our first course was piloted in 2009, and Ready to Rent BC (R2R) was incorporated in 2011. Since then, R2R has been steadily expanding to meet the need for pro-active solutions that increase housing stability and prevent homelessness.

Some have had their first solo exhibition here; others have given classes, been active members, and had studios in one of the 4 locations which we have inhabited over the years. Xchanges is currently home to a gallery exhibition space and studios rented to member artists, including the darkroom of Crossgrain Photographic Society. Life Drawing, Portrait, and Sculpture sessions in the main gallery attract an average of 30 or more outside artists per month. Over the years, Xchanges has hosted events such as poetry readings, concerts, jam sessions, filmmakers’ nights, film festivals, theatre performances, the Mayday Erotica festival, art workshops for both adults and children, and multicultural events such as a monthly Tango Night, exhibitions by the local Native womens’ group, Wild Women, and exchange exhibitions produced by Ground Zero Printmakers exhibiting works from South Africa, New Zealand, and Quebec. Our non-commercial gallery features work by local emerging and established artists. Currently, Watoto cares for almost 3, 000 children. To date, 159 of these have come full circle through the program and are now productive citizens. They have been given back the potential to fulfill their dreams. They were rescued as orphans by social workers, nurtured and cared for by loving moms, educated by teachers, healed physically and emotionally by caring doctors and counsellors, spiritually discipled by pastors, and supported by generous sponsors and friends from around the world. It took a community to raise each one of these children. Now, they have graduated from tertiary education and are responsible and productive adults, earning an honest living and helping to rebuild their community and country. 159 is only a small part of almost 3, 000 children currently under Watoto’s care. 3, 000 is a small part of the thousands of orphans still needing to be rescued in Africa. As a response to this need, Watoto is launching the RAISED BY COMMUNITY campaign to increase awareness and support for the work we do to raise the future leaders of Uganda. It takes a community of positive influences to raise a child in any context. Won't you be a part of that community?
