Xchanges Officers for 2014-2015 President: Kate Seymour Past President: Troi Donnelly Secretary: MaryLou Strickland Treasurer: Barry Herring Building Coördinator: Megan Dickie Gallery Coördinator: Daniela Herold Gallery Programming: Trish Shwart Life Drawing Coördinator: Cindy Wright Studio Coördinator: Wilma deVries Webmaster: Ron Gillmore Many of Victoria’s artists in the past 48 years have been involved with Xchanges. Some have had their first solo exhibition here; others have given classes, been active members, and had studios in one of the 4 locations which we have inhabited over the years. Xchanges is currently home to a gallery exhibition space and studios rented to member artists, including the darkroom of Crossgrain Photographic Society. Life Drawing, Portrait, and Sculpture sessions in the main gallery attract an average of 30 or more outside artists per month. Over the years, Xchanges has hosted events such as poetry readings, concerts, jam sessions, filmmakers’ nights, film festivals, theatre performances, the Mayday Erotica festival, art workshops for both adults and children, and multicultural events such as a monthly Tango Night, exhibitions by the local Native womens’ group, Wild Women, and exchange exhibitions produced by Ground Zero Printmakers exhibiting works from South Africa, New Zealand, and Quebec. Our non-commercial gallery features work by local emerging and established artists. Xchanges' ties to other community arts organizations, through events, membership and the activities of its studio and associate members, continue to make us an integral and vibrant part of the fabric of the Victoria arts community.

Currently, Watoto cares for almost 3, 000 children. To date, 159 of these have come full circle through the program and are now productive citizens. They have been given back the potential to fulfill their dreams. They were rescued as orphans by social workers, nurtured and cared for by loving moms, educated by teachers, healed physically and emotionally by caring doctors and counsellors, spiritually discipled by pastors, and supported by generous sponsors and friends from around the world. It took a community to raise each one of these children. Now, they have graduated from tertiary education and are responsible and productive adults, earning an honest living and helping to rebuild their community and country. 159 is only a small part of almost 3, 000 children currently under Watoto’s care. 3, 000 is a small part of the thousands of orphans still needing to be rescued in Africa. As a response to this need, Watoto is launching the RAISED BY COMMUNITY campaign to increase awareness and support for the work we do to raise the future leaders of Uganda. It takes a community of positive influences to raise a child in any context. Won't you be a part of that community?

Each year, 1700 young people have the life changing experience of learning to sail a tall ship with SALTS. Voyages take them to the Gulf Islands of BC each spring and fall, and in the summer the ships circumnavigate Vancouver Island. Periodically, SALTS conducts an offshore voyage to ports around the world. Young people from all socio-economic backgrounds participate, and a bursary program helps cover costs for those who cannot afford to pay. SALTS partners with numerous other youth organizations to provide bursaries to youth who are at-risk, from low income households, or from challenging life situations. Young “trainees” learn all aspects of sailing the ship. They are split into three “watches” (groups) and given responsibilities as training crew. At least one watch is always on duty, working in shifts both day and night. Duties include taking the wheel of the ship, bow watch, sail handling, anchor watch, navigation, radio monitoring, small boat handling, galley chores, etc. Formal instruction is given regarding sailing theory, rules of the road, sailing terminology, knots, etc. Trainees work their way through the SALTS sail training curriculum. Shore trips to beautiful coastal islands and rousing evening mug-ups with games, stories, and singing make for an exciting and diverse experience.
