Our Purpose To provide a safe place for kids, ages 5-12, where they can build positive relationships with caring adults. To provide safe temporary shelter for adults in transition. To help people become contributing members of their community To give opportunity to build self-esteem by respecting and developing gifts and abilities, by building on people's strengths. To promote a healthy community in which people gain a sense of pride and dignity. To empower people living in this area so they can take control of their own destiny. To provide the healing message of the gospel of Jesus Christ to bring hope to people that are hurting. Mission Statement Build frienships in a fun and healthy community with an opportunity to discover a God who loves, forgives, and invites us to join His family. Core Value Statement We value the Bible. It is from the Bible, God's Word, that we discover God's amazing love, mercy, and grace for all people. From the overflowing abundance of God's love, we find our call to ministry. We value people. We follow the example of Christ who taught us to love all people, regardless of their religion, culture, or race. We will act in ways that demonstrate this love. We value community. For this reason we encourage relationships between staff and children, children and children, as well as staff with other staff. We seek to create an environment of service to one another. Most of all we encourage a friendship with Christ who deeply desires a close relationship with each of us. We value small groups. Inner City Youth Alive (ICYA) is located in the North End of Winnipeg, which is one of the poorest and underserved area in Winnipeg and Canada. ICYA provides a safe, active and nurturing environment for children and youth many of whom experience poverty, abuse and neglect. ICYA engages local kids by offering quality programs through which relationships grow. These supportive relationships play a vital role in the lives of hundreds who are at risk, providing hope, inspiration, mentorship and a strong sense of the Heavenly Father's desire to be in relationship with us. These essential programs empower children and youth to grow and develop into confident individuals who are better equipped to deal with the harsh realities that they face daily. Our History Inner City Youth Alive was founded in 1986 with the vision of Mark Friesen and Kent Dueck. Their vision was to make a difference in the lives of our inner city youth by sharing the love of Christ with them. They committed themselves to the youth and gave their time as volunteers through wilderness camping trips and by teaching them woodworking skills. ICYA had a humble beginning but God faithfully provided so that it has grown to become what it is today. With dozens of volunteers, a large support constituency, great programs and a strong staff team, ICYA continues to make a difference in the lives of youth. The original vision still burns, and genuine caring continues to drive the ministry as they grow into the years ahead.
