CUF was established at the 18th Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) in order to coordinate, develop, organize and deliver assistance projects generated by Canadians and directed to Ukraine. There was and is a need for an institution to monitor, provide & promote commercial, technical and humanitarian aid; to assess and evaluate projects; to foster cooperation and communication among aid providers; to assist in establishing priorities and developing projects that will maximize impact and cost effectiveness; and to act as a forum that brings together individuals and organizations from the community, private and public sectors, which are interested in providing assistance to Ukraine. CUF therefore was established as a national charitable foundation that would federate Canadian organizations that have projects in Ukraine. Vision Statement: To assist in the development of a democratic nation with a civil society which maintains and develops culture, tradition and language in Ukraine by strengthening strategic partnerships in Canada and Ukraine.

As a young Cambodian woman, Ponheary Ly survived the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge only to endure ensuing decades of occupation, civil war and poverty. Within the suffering she and her family experienced, she found a great compassion for the children of Cambodia — the forgotten ones, the disenfranchised ones, the ones who without help have little hope of escaping the cycle of poverty brought by decades of genocide and war. Ponheary started a project to support the return of rural children to school and help them stay there. She now supports four schools in and around Siem Reap, helping thousands of children by providing supplies, uniforms, clean water, breakfast programs and basic medical care so that the children will be physically healthy enough to attend school.

Transplantation was still experimental. It was during this time that a young Montreal architect, Morty Tarder, died from kidney disease. Confronted with their son’s death, the Tarder family vowed to start an organization that would raise money for research into this poorly understood disease. In 1964, The Kidney Disease Foundation of Canada, as it was known then, was created in Montreal. Today, the Kidney Foundation of Canada is the national health charity committed to kidney health and to improved lives for all people living with kidney disease. Our vision for the future is an enduring legacy of those dedicated volunteers who, 40 years ago, started out with a compelling cause and the resolve to make a difference. Since 1964, our fundraising campaigns have allowed us to contribute millions of dollars to research, and to provide services to individuals living with chronic kidney disease and related conditions. In the 1960s, people with kidney failure had little hope of survival. Dialysis was considered an extraordinary treatment and restricted to very few.
