Bakka first opened its doors in 1972. The name, Bakka, was taken from Frank Herbert’s Dune, and means ‘the weeper who mourns for all mankind’. In the nearly 40 years since, the store has changed owners, locations, and even its name (slightly). But what hasn’t changed is our knowlege of, committment to, and sheer darned enjoyment of science fiction and fantasy. We host tons of author appearences, readings, panels, and offsite events of all kinds. We’re Canada’s oldest SF& F bookstore, and we’re proud to be part of the greater community.

BMV began in 1997 at its present Edward St. location, next-door to the World’s Biggest Bookstore. The philosophy behind BMV has always been to sell good books at low prices. It’s easy to find quality books that are expensive and marginal books that are cheap. The BMV challenge has always been to find unusual and interesting books of high quality and to sell them at very reasonable prices. In 1999 BMV opened its Yonge and Eglinton location, which is still thriving today. At 15, 000 sq., the store at 471 Bloor St. is Canada’s largest bookstore for pre-loved and discounted books. It boasts four floors of Books, DVDs, Comics, CDs, Records, and Magazines. There are more then a thousand different items being shelved everyday, which makes every visit a unique experience. Our continuing mission is to search out unique finds wherever we can to bring you the finest books at affordable prices. The Pin The first and only Yiddish feature ever produced in Canada, The Pin is a haunting love story about two young adults hiding out in a barn in Lithuania during the Second World War. Filmmaker Naomi Jaye layers this simple story with rich atmospheric camera work, an eye for sensual detail, and moving performances by the two leads, who were taught to speak an impeccable-sounding Yiddish. “With limited resources and the power of storytelling, [Jaye] has created a small film that feels mainstream and epic” (The New York Times). With this special presentation, TJFF honours the uniqueness of this film and its production. Guests: Director Naomi Jaye and cast Part of REEL Ashkenaz ASL Translator will be present at screening for introduction and post-film Q & A Co-presented with: Sponsored by: Nora & Jacob Dehan Festival Welcome Thanks Support Events Resources Filmmakers Education.
