Mission-Driven – We will lay down our lives to help others find theirs. Grace-Centred - We trust the Bible and the Holy Spirit to form people’s convictions. Theologically Conservative - We take the Bible at face value and submit to its authority. Culturally Progressive – We choose relevance over tradition. Relationally Connected – We are strong because of our commitments to each other. Process-Oriented - We believe discipleship doesn’t happen by accident. The Surrey Hospice Society has been supporting our community for 25 years. This service includes providing social, emotional and spiritual support for individuals and their loved ones as they face life threatening illnesses, and ongoing grief support programs for children, teens and adults. There is a misconception that Hospices mainly care for the elderly who are close to the end of their lives. Not so. Our Palliative Care wards have too many 30, 40 & 50 year olds, concerned about leaving young children, teens and spouses devastated & wondering how they will carry on with life. Social workers & nurses call our volunteers a loving, compassionate neutral human presence. Medical staff has told us they could not do their job without the support of Hospice volunteers. The Surrey Hospice Society has 96 client volunteers - that’s one on one support in the Hospice Residence and on the Palliative Ward at Surrey Memorial Hospital as well as respite in homes. Hospice palliative care is about living fully to the very end of life with dignity and comfort. Then there are the staff and volunteers who work primarily with bereavement support. This can be one to one support or bereavement group support available to adults, adolescents or children experiencing a loss. Hospice would not exist without volunteers. They are the Heart & Soul of the Society and the work that we do. Their selfless acts of compassion and support touch lives in untold ways. It can be a gentle silent presence when painful emotions prevail, to answering the many calls that come into the office from distressed individuals looking for support, to coordinating our mail outreach program for the bereaved. In serving life many gifts are received in return. The volunteers constantly tell our Program Director, Barbara Morningstar how they have been transformed by this work and it has made them stronger and more compassionate human beings. Hearts become richer in profound ways.
