The Ontario Hockey League is a proud member of the Canadian Hockey League which is the world’s largest development hockey league with 60 teams in nine Canadian provinces and five American states. In addition to the OHL, the CHL is made up of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and the Western Hockey League. Last season, more than nine million fans attended CHL games in the regular season, playoffs and at the MasterCard Memorial Cup. The CHL supplies more players to the National Hockey League than any other league. Last season 527 graduates attended Canadian Universities on scholarships from CHL teams.

One hot summer night in July, 1974, a group of firefighters from 12 departments in Southern Ontario got together around a table at the Carling O’Keefe Breweries meeting room in Kitchener, Ontario. Their purpose was to organize a firefighter’s hockey league which would accommodate players in the area and provide some fun and fellowship. The league formed that night was called the Southern Ontario Firefighters Hockey League and its objectives were: the fostering and encouraging of a high degree of skill and efficiency in hockey, good sportsmanship, and the cultivating of friendship among its members.

The Hockey Development Centre for Ontario (HDCO) was established in 1984 to respond to the safety, education and development needs of amateur hockey in Ontario. Formerly known as Hockey Ontario, the HDCO has membership from all Amateur Hockey Bodies within the Province of Ontario Each of these members has voting rights and representation on the organization's Board of Directors. The Board elects a Chairperson who is the Chief Executive Officer of the organization. The Past Chairman rounds out the Board of Directors.

The Markham Islanders Sledge Hockey Team was formed in 1986. Sledge Hockey is an exciting sport for people with special needs. The same rules are followed as in ice hockey, with six players on the ice, including a goalie. Players sit on a sledge, which is a narrow platform with skate blades attached to the bottom, and propel themselves using two specially constructed hockey sticks that have picks on the end. Players wear full hockey gear and are strapped onto the sledges. The sledges can be adapted to meet the individual needs of each player. It is currently one of the most popular sports in the Paralympic Games.

History The 'East York Hockey League' was founded in September of 1944. Games commenced at "Dieppe Park" in January 1945 on 2 cusions of natural outdoor ice. Sponsors were sought, and teams were established by inserting a notice in the daily papers for East York boys wishing to play hockey. In 1946 Stan Wadlow was hired as 'Director of Recreation' and the league officially changed it's name in 1947 to become 'East York Hockey Association'. In 1947 the big sponsors were the 'East York Fire Department' as well as 'Whipper Watson's Whipper Pack'. Leagues were balanced to 4 teams each by adding recreation teams. Peewees played Saturday mornings and other series teams played Monday to Friday (weather conditions permitting). Various ideas were tried to improve the game. Lines were painted over the ice and worked well until the thaw came - and the lines ran all over the ice. Upon freezing the ice was an array of red white and blue. Due to the executive, coaches and referees freezing while at the rink from 7:00am to 10pm - small huts were placed between the rink with heaters inside. In the meantime members of the executive and local politicians were making a pitch for an indoor artificial ice arena. Due to the dedication and hard work of many volunteers 'East York Arena' came into operation before the 1951-1952 season. Professional wrestling was also performed in the East York Arena with such names as 'Whipper Billy Watson', 'Yukon Eric' and many others. The volunteers and residents who unselfishly gave their time to make the 'East York Arena' what it is today deserve alot of praise.
