The origin of Daito ryu aiki jujutsu can be traced to emperor Seiwa (850 A.D). Long kept a secret under the Minamoto clan, the art was used by the Emperor’s army and private guard. Controlled by Japanese nobility, appointed official martial art of the Shogun’s residence by Hoshina Masayuki in the late 1600’s, Daito techniques were transmitted from generation to generation. Through the centuries numerous masters of this discipline were important war lords, such as Shingen Takeda, the most famous in Japanese culture. Among his descendants, whose destinies were intimately linked with Daitoryu, we find Sokaku Takeda, a master and reviver of the art. Jiu Jitsu is an ancient martial art style that dates back hundreds of years to feudal Japan. The Samurai were the most respected and feared of all warriors of that time. Although the Samurai favoured the sword and bow and arrow, when they lost their weapons, they needed something to protect themselves against their enemies. Since their enemies wore armour, using a fighting style with a lot of punches and kicks would have proven ineffective against the armour.

Jiu-Jitsu on the other hand is more designed around ground fighting and can be used very effectively as self defense. Judo was derived from Jiu-Jitsu when the founder of Judo was looking for a safe martial art that could be taught to children as well as adults as a sport and not a form of self defense. Our head instructor has been teaching both kids as well as adults since 1985 and ran a very effective martial arts program in the Canadian armed forces as well as a judo club in Calgary Alberta. Judokaa Martial arts are always looking for new members and accept children from 4 years of age and up. We are conveniently located in Whitby, just off Highway 401, with ample parking and fantastic facilities. Durham Shorin Ryu Karate teaches Shorin Mastubyashi Ryu karate-do, which was developed in Okinawa, Japan by Shoshin Nagamine. We focus on the art of karate-do emphasizing kata (forms), traditional weapons training (kobudo), self-defense, basics, character development, sparring and physical fitness. Improve your self-esteem, self-confidence, physical fitness, self-awareness and more! We welcome families and students from six years old and up. We will consider students as young as five if the child has good focusing skills. Jiu-Jitsu and Yoga are also available. Ask us about our family and multi-martial arts rates. Our facility is large (the training area is over 29 feet by 34 feet) clean and bright. There are large mirrors to help you improve your technique.
