Formerly known as the Mississauga Symphonic Association, the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra received its Letters Patent in 1972 after a group of local residents in cooperation with the City of Mississauga’s Arts Department came together with the goal of bringing orchestral music to the residents of Mississauga. Dr. Boyd Neal, Dean of the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto, was hired as inaugural Administrative/Artistic Director. The first concert was held with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in an unused office in a building owned by Bruce McLaughlin, certainly an unusual performance space. The organization gained charitable status shortly thereafter.

In 1960, Cecil Rose, an Etobicoke businessman and part-time clarinetist saw the need for a community orchestra where amateur musicians could come together to perform the great masterpieces of the classics just for fun. He rented the neighbourhood YMCA for rehearsals and with the help of the local papers, by the end of the year there were 90 performers in the EPO. The first concert took place on February 22, 1961 and played to a full auditorium of friends and family.
