We all face difficult moments in life, times that push us to stretch and grow in new ways. When they occur, therapy can bring perspective, renew hope, improve coping, and help you gain greater meaning in life. I have over 25 years experience as a registered psychologist in the Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley area, helping people with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, grief, trauma, life transitions and more. I view psychotherapy as a partnership in which we work together to understand your problems and find solutions. Where current concerns are front and centre, we look at developing fresh ways of understanding, coping with or changing the situation. Where past experiences are getting in your way, we work to help you let go of the things you need to and move forward. I have training in psychodynamic, interpersonal, experiential, cognitive-behavioural, and dialectical behavioral therapies.

Many people wander through life feeling stunted, as if they are biding time rather than truly living each moment. Above all, the most common complaint we hear from our clients is that they feel stuck. Stuck in anger, frustration, stress, grief or sadness, in fear, depression or anxiety. Some are stuck in unhealthy relationships or unhealthy patterns of relating to others. For some the feeling of being stuck is new and uncomfortable, for others it has been a lifetime. This can be the result of our life experiences, our past hurts, and the pressure of day to day stressors, leaving a sense of dissatisfaction, irritability, difficulty in relationships and the feeling of being out of control. ThriveLife Counselling & Wellness is a collective of highly skilled clinicians with a shared vision and passion for promoting growth and wellness for the clients we serve. Visit our website to learn more about our counsellors and their areas of specialized practice.

We all have a need to be connected to others and to avoid being hurt. It's how we uniquely try to accomplish both that creates our personality and can also indicate what needs to be changed. For example, some people will focus on connecting with others and overlook how to protect themselves from being hurt. Others have developed strong skills in avoiding rejection at the expense of having closer relationships. Some people may behave inconsistently, giving others unclear messages whether they want closeness or distance. Therapy with me in using an interpersonal-psychodynamic approach will involve us working together to help you become aware of interpersonal "pulls" that lead you to act in a way that you later regret. We'll focus on current relationships, including the working or professional relationship between us. A large part of my job as your psychologist is to give you honest feedback about how you come across in relationships, and to do so in a supportive manner to help you more directly get your needs met. This can be accomplished in a powerful way by catching ourselves in the moment to sort through when your intentions don't match your behaviour, or what to do when you experience a "pull". I work similarly in group therapy which is a powerful and effective method for treating interpersonal difficulties like having a hard time saying "no", finding others hurt by your honest feedback, repeating patterns in relationships from childhood experiences, having difficulty at work because of relationships with authority figures, avoiding conflict. Give me a call if the way I work fits for you. I'd be happy to answer any further questions you have in how we might work together.
