Incorporated in 1974, Afton is an amalgamation of the following rural communities: Cumberland, Fairview, New Dominion, Nine Mile Creek, Rice Point and Rocky Point. "Afton Hall" was built on the New Dominion site in 1897. Funds to build the structure were raised through the sale of shares in the building. Neil Livingstone donated a piece of land (65' x 65') from the Meadow Brook Farm in exchange for four shares. A total of 100 $5.00 shares were sold on the structure. Following in the tradition of earlier community members, John and Dorothy MacEwen donated additional property for the construction of the present "Afton Community Centre" pictured in the left corner above. The new Centre's construction began in 1989 and the building has acted as an active focal point in the community since 1990.
