Marriage counselling. Couples therapy. Sex. Relationships. Trauma. Serving clients in-person in Campbell River, and worldwide via phone and skype.
Why Counselling? People come to counselling for two reasons. Either there’s an immediate issue – something has come to a head and it needs to be dealt with NOW (relationship breakdown, sudden loss or other crisis) – or there’s an ongoing issue that is interfering with happiness (conflict in a marriage or family, depression/anxiety, sexual issues, a dilemma or difficult decision, grief, trauma, abuse, or even something not fully nameable that lies just below the surface and keeps a person from feeling fully happy or comfortable in their own skin). For an immediate issue I help the client calm down and get their bearings, then together we assess the problem and identify appropriate action. Sometimes the issue is resolved fairly quickly and the counselling is brief. Other times deeper issues emerge that the client may want to address. For an ongoing issue the process is usually longer and the work goes deeper, with an emphasis on identifying and transforming old patterns and unconscious beliefs. In either case, I take a collaborative approach with my clients. We explore possibilities together, with me acting as a compassionate guide and ally. Ultimately the insight and change comes from the client’s own experience. While women are sometimes assumed to be more comfortable with exploring feelings in counselling, I’ve worked extensively with men too, developing effective approaches that align with the modern male psyche. I’m respectful of diverse backgrounds, beliefs, cultures and lifestyles. I’ve helped Christians, Muslims, Atheists, self-proclaimed rednecks and hippies of all political stripes, professionals, entrepreneurs, retirees, single moms and dads, individuals and couples who are straight, gay, and everything in between, mixed families and so on. If you’re willing to show up and be real, I will respect you for who you are and be an ally for who you want to become. Confidentiality is assured.

Gary Hartford has a Master of Counselling degree with a specialization in counselling psychology. He is also a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors. This is a professional designation that indicates that Gary has met criteria for education, experience, and supervised practice. At the core of Gary's practice is the belief that people desire balance in their lives and that a feeling of balance, in large part, originates in a person's sense of being a coherent self. A coherent self is found when one's experience of the world matches one's understanding of the world. From this perspective, Gary's role as a counsellor is to help clients resolve problems by exploring other solutions and building self-coherence.

Rod Chant Counselling Services in Campbell River and Courtenay: I am a Clinical Counsellor with 18 years post Masters experience. I have specific experience and credentialing in the area of emotional management, addictions, relationships and domestic violence. My practise areas are wide and varied and I utilize a variety of treatment modalities (mindfulness based cognitive-behavioural, solution focused, multi-systemic, psychodynamic and experiential) . I work towards a safe, trusting and comfortable client-counsellor relationship; one that fosters personal growth in terms of self reliance, skills, confidence and positive insights. It is my belief that such a relationship facilitates emotional well-being, self-empowerment and self fulfillment. I work with families, couples, adolescents, and individuals; I have experience working with Residential School survivors and am secure in my belief that I present myself as culture, gender, and age sensitive in my work. We have an innate need to feel connected. Connection with others leads to a sense of security, in other words, feeling safe. When we don’t feel safe, when we perceive dishonesty, feeling dismissed, disrespected, discounted, we react. We first react in our bodies (fear, anxiety, anger), our thoughts, and then our actions (accusations, criticism, judgements, put downs). We can feel most fulfilled through our relationships, when feeling connected through acknowledgement, validation, acts of appreciation. By the same token, we can feel the most abandoned, alone and scared when we feel disconnected by/from those closest to us. In times of hurt and confusion, an objective support person can help guide us through the confusion and understand not just our hurt, but also what a significant other is experiencing. A professional counsellor can help us see through the web of thoughts and emotions, to better understand the underlying needs and hurts,
