The Physical Therapy Department is committed to educating future and current physical therapists, advancing practice, fostering leadership and contributing to our communities to improve the health and population of individuals through the discovery, application and exchange of knowledge. Our History Our department was Founded in 1929 as the first Physical Therapy program in Canada in the Department of Extension at the University of Toronto. This initial program was a two-year program with an additional six months of clinical practice, leading to a diploma in Physiotherapy. By 1950 the program had evolved to a three-year program with eight months of clinical experience and was transferred to the Faculty of Medicine and combined with Occupational Therapy. Graduates received a diploma of Physical and Occupational Therapy. In 1971 this program was updated to become a four-year Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Faculty of Medicine. In 1993, the Department of Physical Therapy was established and the four-year direct entry Bachelor program included a range of science and core physical therapy courses as well as 30 weeks of clinical practice. The program was updated again in 1995 with it becoming a second-level entry program and it was adjusted to a three year course of study. Graduates received a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Therapy (BSc(PT)). This undergraduate program was replaced in 2001 with the 26-month Master of Science in Physical Therapy (MScPT). In 2007, the program was consolidated into 24 months including 28 weeks of full-time clinical internships plus 66 hours of clinical structure skill sessions that are integrated into the curriculum. The MScPT is a professional program that requires the completion of a four-year undergraduate degree for admission.
