Nishnawbe Aski Nation (known as Grand Council Treaty No. 9 until 1983) was established in 1973. It represents the legitimate, socioeconomic, and political aspirations of its First Nation members of Northern Ontario to all levels of government in order to allow local self-determination while establishing spiritual, cultural, social, and economic independence. In 1977, Grand Council Treaty No. 9 made a public declaration of the rights and principles of Nishnawbe Aski.

Wequedong Lodge is centrally located and is easily accessible to hospital, clinics and transportation depots. Wequedong Lodge is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors. Financial and program accountability is provided by staff hired by the Board. Communication and working relationships have been developed between the Lodge and Northwestern Ontario communities, nursing stations, physicians, health authorities and hospitals. Wequedong Lodge has developed a dependable reputation in providing a safe and secure environment for clients. Wequedong Lodge provides a drug and alcohol free environment. We have also gained an adequate understanding of health care needs of First Nations (on and off reserve), Metis and Inuit. (Metis will be afforded a preferred client rate equal to one half of the current overnight charge per client). Wequedong Lodge's main goal is to continue to meet the needs of Aboriginal people.
