The Official Ground Breaking Ceremony for the construction of St. Mark Catholic Elementary School took place on November 12, 1999. His Excellency, Bishop Anthony Tonnos, along with Chairperson, Mr. Patrick Daly, Director of Education, Mr. Marcel Castura, appointed Principal Mr. Corrado Ciapanna, and Trustee Mr. Raymond Bartolloti, had the honour of turning the first spade of soil on the road to the building of the newest Catholic Elementary School on Stoney Creek Mountain. The students from St. James School and St. Paul School who would be attending St. Mark School in September 2001, also took part in this memorable occasion. St. Mark Elementary School opened its first days of classes in September of 2001 under the direction and leadership of the first Principal, Mr. Corrado Ciapanna ( 2001-2003). The Red and Gold Winged Lions embraced the motto of "Pride in Faith, Self and Learning" and quickly made their presence known within the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic .
