LSPU Hall 1905Like many other buildings in downtown St. John’s, the LSPU Hall currently stands on a site that has a history stretching back hundreds of years. In the case of this building, the use of the site traced back to 1789 when it was the location of the first Congregationalist Church in Newfoundland. The structure built by the Congregationalists lasted until 1817 when it was destroyed in one of several Great Fires that ravaged St. John’s in the 19th century. Rebuilt again, it was then used by several denominations for visiting preachers, meetings, and social events. In 1853 the Sons of Temperance purchased the building and rebuilt it after it was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1892. The building was sold again in 1912, this time to the Longshoremen’s Protective Union (LSPU). Victoria Street, where the LSPU Hall is located, was originally known as Meeting House Lane.

Resource Centre for the Arts is the umbrella organization for; RCA Theatre Company (RCAT), and the LSPU Hall.”The Hall” is a hot spot of cultural activity. It produces and creates indigenous artistic works. The Hall also provides space for artists, and many other groups and individuals, through its rental program. Our Main Stage Theatre and Second Space are booked for dance festivals, awards events, sound symposia, film festivals, live web-casts, CD launches, readings, concerts, plays, workshops, children’s theatre, and forums for discussing cultural values. The Resource Centre for the Arts is just that – a resource centre for our province’s artists. Many of the individuals RCA has supported over the years have gone on to become international ambassadors for the arts and culture of Canada as well as Newfoundland and Labrador – artists such as Mary Walsh, Gordon Pinsent, Rick Mercer, Andy Jones, Cathy Jones, Tommy Sexton, Berni Stapleton, Ed Riche, Ron Hynes, and Bob Joy – to name a few. The list of those fostered through the existence of RCA goes on, and our goal is to add many names to it for years to come.
