Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose. Our dentists are able to administer nitrous oxide to particularly anxious patients or for certain surgical procedures. The gas allows the patient to relax and enjoy the appointment without any fear or apprehension. IV (Intravenous) Sedation Understandably, some patients feel anxious or afraid when it comes to visiting their dentist. By undergoing IV sedation, our dentists can put nervous patients at ease. It is also designed to help patients with low pain thresholds. The IV sedation process consists of administering a sedative drug directly into the blood stream by inserting a needle into a vein. After only a few moments, the patient drifts off into a state of deep relaxation, so much so that they will not remember most or all of the procedure after waking up. Contrary to popular belief, IV sedation does not put the patient to sleep despite feeling like they have dozed off. They maintain a certain level of consciousness, but is unaware of his/her surroundings and the procedure. Once the sedation starts to wear off and the patient begins to regain awareness of their environment, they will require assistance out of the clinic, usually by a family member or a friend, due to the fact they will experience drowsiness.
Healthy gum tissue forms a protective collar around a tooth preventing periodontal disease, tooth sensitivity and root decay. When gum tissue recedes, exposing the tooth’s root, sensitivity may result. A cavity on the root (root caries) may also develop because the softer root surface decays more readily than the enamel on the tooth’s crown. When minor gum recession is ignored, then the likelihood of further recession and bone loss becomes much more likely.
When a tooth is extracted from the mouth, a significant void or crater is created where the tooth once was. In addition, the bone surrounding the extraction site loses an average of 50% of its volume within the first twelve months. This loss of bone in the jaw creates complications for the adjacent teeth, the overall bite and the extraction site itself. This also hinders the restorative success of the missing tooth site, whether it is with a dental implant, a bridge or a denture.
When restoration procedures such as root canal therapy, crowns or fillings are not enough to save a tooth, our dentists may need to remove/extract it. All Capital Dentistry clinics in Ottawa and Gatineau have dentists specializing in the art of tooth extraction. If you’re experiencing intense pain from a tooth, it’s important that you call one of our dental offices to assess your situation as soon as possible.
