DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

DIABETIC-RETINOPATHY-Edit
According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, there are about 285 million people worldwide who have diabetes. Each year, 7 million more people join this statistic and these numbers keep growing. In Canada, over 9 million people live with this disease. Diabetic Retinopathy, a well recognized neuro-vascular disease, is a condition that may occur due to diabetes complications. Diabetes causes damage to blood vessels in the retina which as a result may start to swell and bleed. The retina is located at the back of the eye; it converts light into electrical signals which are then transmitted to the brain for further processing. Without the retina, or with a damaged retina, vision can be lost.
