Special Interest Groups are agencies of the Association for Bahá’í Studies, which itself is an agency of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Canada. Both the Association and its Special Interest Groups are structured as membership organisations with appointed administrators. Both exist to stimulate scholarly study of the Faith and its teachings, to promote a sound understanding of the Cause in academic circles, to demonstrate its relevance to the study of social issues, and to stimulate an appetite for learning within the Bahá’í community generally. In order to serve these purposes, the specific goals of the Special Interest Group system are as follows: to promote networking among ABS members, based on their interests, fields and professions; to mentor students and young people, in their studies and early professional life; to encourage, inspire and facilitate individual and collaborative Bahá’í scholarship; and to support, as appropriate, members’ “outward looking orientation” within their respective fields and professions, with particular emphasis on universities.

SOS Children’s Villages provides orphaned and abandoned children with a safe and loving home, and also helps strengthen vulnerable families. Through our Children’s Villages, SOS offers orphaned and abandoned children a family and a loving home with a mother to care and support them in a safe environment where their needs for food, health and shelter are met. SOS Children’s Villages also keeps families together through skills training and community development to ensure self sufficiency and prevent child abandonment. In response to a community-based proposal from parents and educators of preschoolers in the Ottawa-Carleton region, the Parent Resource Centre (formerly known as the Parent Preschool Resource Centre) opened in 1975 as a demonstration project of the Ministry of National Health and Welfare (now Health Canada). The original aim was to provide a centralized location to store, share and distribute information about the needs of preschool children, aged birth to five. The Centre evolved as a community-wide resource for caregivers, parents and professionals involved with early childhood issues. It soon became apparent that one of the most important aspects of the Centre's service was to provide a place for parents and caregivers to meet, to access resources and to connect with other adults while their preschoolers played. "Drop-In" hours were extended and the number of daytime workshops and opportunities for volunteering were increased to meet the needs of the community. Outreach to caregivers and other community groups followed, and the past two decades have seen tremendous achievements throughout the wider community, particularly in supporting parents who, because of their social and economic circumstances, might not have access to the resources they need as they take on the challenging job of raising young children.

Shepherds of Good Hope is the largest non-profit organization dedicated to serving the poor and the homeless in Ottawa. We were founded in the basement of a church 31 years ago and today over 1600 people come through our doors every day. Some come for a hot meal from our Soup Kitchen; some come for clothing from our Clothing Program; some for groceries from our Grocery Program and some for a bed in one of our 8 locations across the city. Last year, 700, 000 meals were served from the soup kitchen and over 500 people slept in one of our 8 facilities every night.
