What Exactly Is A WETT Certified Chimney Sweep

2017.08.30

WETT Inc is the most recognized area of training, expertise and certifications in Canada.  WETT is the one that realtors and all insurance companies point to and require when having inspections done.

WETT over the years has worked hard to earn that respect and recognition.

Unfortunately there are those working in the industry who abuse the job the are performing in a few ways.

  1. some claim to be WETT certified and are not!   Check their WETT Certification Number - every WETT Certified individual will have one that is unique.   If you want better validation check the WETT website here.
  2. some are certified but only the most basic credentials - this is important when having inspections done - look for a Chimney Sweep to ensure best results.
  3. some are working in the industry and have zero credentials or education and do not advertise - but consumers are often not aware of any need or difference.

So what is the difference?

Lets begin with the Chimney Sweep.  A Chimney Sweep has to first take the Basic Inspector training and pass.  A chimney sweep also needs a minimum amount of field work performing sweeps before certification can be given.  Hence this is a credential that provides validation of field experience and classroom education / testing.  There is also the Advanced Chimney Sweep - which only provided evidence of additional education - superior grade levels on exams and additional time in field.

On the inspector side there is the Basic and Comprehensive.  The Basic is just that - the first and lowest credential offered by WETT.  Many of these individuals have never repaired or installed a woodstove, fireplace or chimney.  Many have never cleaned a chimney or wood burning system.  In fact some may not even know how to properly operate the wood burning system!  There is no requirement for any field work other than performing of inspections - which are visual only.  There is nothing wrong with the Basic Inspector - but if hiring one ensure the individual has other experience in the field (installations / cleaning / selling / repair / etc. )  It is best to protect yourself.  The Comprehensive Inspector has far more evidence of field experience as well a the hands on experience.  The Comprehensive Inspector has had sweeping / cleaning experience and/or installation / repair experience.   These inspectors are able to perform Level 1 - 2 or 3 Inspections.

However the article was on Sweeps so lets not get sidetracked.  It should be noted however that most Comprehensive Inspectors are also sweeps.

The Sweeps are not only knowledgeable - but can offer a lot of onsite assistance so be sure to ask questions.
