Buckwheat Pillow Canda hits 50,000th landmark sale!
2013.01.28
OTTAWA — Today, Buckwheat Pillow Canada president Irene Foley announced that the 14-year-old cottage industry has chalked up its 50,000th sale.
“We had no idea that the business, which is still very much a family affair, would explode this way, when I made the first pillow in 1998,” says Foley.
Each pillow, stuffed and sewn by a member of the Foley family, contains approx. 18,000 buckwheat shells — many of them products of the family farm and the rest purchased from hand-picked North American suppliers.
“When we started the business, we grew our own buckwheat,” says Foley. “We are just too big for that now, but we make sure that the additional shells we use meet our purity standard.”
The pillows, which are free from dust mites, bacteria, chemicals and preservatives, help people to sleep more soundly and wake up free from aches and pains, she explains.
“They stay cool because of the air pockets in the shells and they move with the body, so they allow the muscles at the back of the head, neck and shoulders to relax, as well as helping to realign the spine. We have consistent endorsements from physicians, pain management specialists, physiotherapists, chiropractors and allergists and our book of letters from satisfied customers tells us that they have found relief from 28 different ailments after using our buckwheat pillow.”
Foley also points out the environmental benefits, “When our hull pillows have reached the end of their life, just add the hulls to your garden or composter; hulls are great for the soil”.
Buckwheat hull pillows are available from the Ottawa headquarters at 927 March Road, by phone order or by mail order via the company website at www.buckwheatpillowcanada.com.

Sleep well with Buckwheat Pillow Canada
2013.01.28
Irene Foley has slept soundly and woken refreshed and pain free since she began sleeping on her perfect pillow. Her discovery of the therapeutic effects of a buckwheat hull pillow was also the spark for a successful home-based business.
“It all started about 15 years ago,” she says. “I was complaining about waking up with a sore neck and a headache to a friend who had just come back from a trip to Japan with a buckwheat pillow. She gave it to me to try and, within three nights, the sore neck and headache had gone.”
“I’ve always been a bit of an entrepreneur at heart,” she adds, “so I decided to start making the pillows, with a few refinements.”
Now close to 15 years and 50,000 pillows later, Buckwheat Pillow Canada is selling its handmade products across Canada and the U.S.
“We had no idea that the business, which is still very much a family affair, would explode this way, when I made that first pillow,” says Irene. “The mail-order side is particularly busy, but I have to stay home most days because we also have a constant flow of people coming to our home office to view and purchase our products.”
Each cotton-covered pillow, stuffed and sewn by a member of the Foley family, contains 18,000 buckwheat shells — many of them products of the family farm and the rest purchased from other hand-picked North American suppliers.
“When we started the business, we grew our own buckwheat,” says Irene, whose family has been farming in the area for more than a century. “We are just too big for that now, but we make sure that the additional shells we use meet our purity standard.”
The pillows help people to sleep more soundly and wake up free from aches and pains, for a number of reasons, she explains.
“With most pillows, the heat and moisture from our head and neck go into the pillow and the more heat and moisture, the better the breeding ground for bacteria and dust mites,” says Irene. “It’s just the opposite with our pillows. They keep the head and neck cool and moisture free because the air pockets in the shells allow air to circulate continually within the pillow. You don’t have to turn our pillows to the cool side. They’re cool all the time. They also move with the body, so they allow the muscles at the back of the head, neck and shoulders to relax, as well as helping to realign the spine. We have had a lot of letters from people with sleep apnea or snoring problems saying that our pillows have helped them. We also have many endorsements from physicians, pain-management specialists, physiotherapists, chiropractors and allergists and our book of letters from satisfied customers tells us that they have found relief from 28 different ailments after using our buckwheat pillow.”
“Everyone in the family has been using our pillows since we started making them,” says Irene’s daughter Judy, the company vice president and marketing head. “We are the living proof of how well they work and, because we still make every one individually, we can guarantee their content and know that they last a very long time, on average from seven to 10 years.”
“Our pillow has no bacteria, no dust mites, no chemicals and no preservatives,” says Irene, adding that tests by analysts at the University of Guelph as far back as 1999 gave pillows that had been used regularly for more than two years a clean bill of health from dustmites.
“We use a three-step cleaning process, vacuum-sifting to remove all chaff, seeds and other debris,” explains Judy. “Most synthetic fibre, foam and feather pillows contain some chemicals or preservatives. Our buckwheat hull pillow is filled with 100 per cent pure all natural buckwheat hulls.”
“You can sanitize, deodorize and renew the pillow by putting it in front of a window where the sun can reach it — just the way our grandmothers used to do,” says Irene. “The contents are natural and we believe that buckwheat hull pillows are the natural way to get a ‘hull’ of a good rest.”
