What's a segregated fund

2015.10.14

A Segregated Fund or Seg Fund is a type of investment fund administered by Canadian insurance companies offering certain guarantees to the policyholder such as reimbursement of capital upon death. They provide a guarantee to protect part of the money you invest (75% to 100%). They are often referred to as "mutual funds with an insurance policy wrapper", so if insurance isn't possible for you, this could be a way to save and insure yourself with a single contract.

Segregated Funds are the engine behind all registered and non-registered investment plans (RRSP, TFSA, NRSP, RDSP, LIRA, etc.) so it's crucial to have a professional examine and compare them to make sure they are still the best choice for you. A good Financial Security Advisor will call you at least once every year to set up an appointment and check on the progress of your fund and how it's doing in the markets.

A mutual fund is a type of professionally managed investment fund that pools money from many investors in many collective investment vehicles that are regulated and sold to the general public. The main idea behind this type of fund is to diversify your assets into a greater number of stocks, bonds, bills, etc. so you can lower the risk of being invested in too few positions and augment your chances of getting higher returns.

Mutual funds are the engine behind all registered and non-registered investment plans (RRSP, TFSA, NRSP, RDSP, LIRA, etc.) so it's crucial to have a professional examine and compare them to make sure they are still the best choice for you. A good Mutual Fund Sales Representative will call you at least once every year to set up an appointment and check on the progress of your fund and how it's doing in the markets.

Always make sure that whatever investment tool you use, whether it's an RRSP, a LIRA, a TFSA, etc., that you have the right fund in it!
