Valoritec is a nonprofit organization that promotes recycling and proper management of electronic and information technology waste (e-waste). It is estimated that there is about 140 000 tons of e-waste sent to landfills every year in Canada. In 2006, about 39 000 tons of residues coming from information and communications technologies were produced in Québec alone. Televisions accounted for half of this amount and 6000 tons of that waste was computers. A computer tower and a cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor are composed of toxic substances such as lead, cadmium, beryllium and mercury. These products are potentially hazardous for human or animal health. They could also harm the environment if they are not handled properly. Recycling not only helps to reduce waste, it also has many other environmental and economic advantages such as creating jobs and preserving natural resources. It allows to save more energy as well. It is each individual’s responsibility to dispose of their e-waste in a proper and eco-friendly fashion.
