Ukrainian Catholic Church, Brandon, MB

Hello! My name is Reverend Michael Tkachuk and I am currently the parish priest of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish (also known as St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church) in Brandon. The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish was instituted in 1904. The first church was built on the corner of First Street and Lorne Avenue. Our first priest was Fr. DeLaere and our first church cantor was Joseph Kaschor. As more Ukrainian families moved to Brandon, the small church could not accommodate the growth. A larger church was built at was now the present location of our church - 933 Assiniboine Avenue. Leo Mol, a famous artist and sculptor, painted the beautiful images on the ceiling of our church which, to this day, still exist in their original form. The present church was re-furbished in 1997 when contractors refinished the exterior of the church and added a new foyer to the structure. The project was completed in 1998. In 1999, the interior of the church was upgraded. Stained glass windows were installed, new pews replaced the old ones and a new chandelier (imported from Greece) was installed. In 2004, the Church celebrated its centennial. The Church is considered one of Brandon's historic landmarks. Today, approximately 150 families support the parish. Week-day Divine Liturgy Services are held Wednesday to Friday at 9:00 a.. Saturday service is at 5:00 p. for those who prefer an English service or who work on Sunday. Sunday service is at 9:00 a. or 10:00 a. (depending on season) and is celebrated in English and Ukrainian.
