The History of Pretty River Academy Pretty River Academy first opened its doors in September 1998, founded by Roberta Murray Hirst. The school was incorporated in 1998 as a charitable, non-profit organization. Originally situated on the shores of Georgian Bay, in Collingwood, at the former Easter Seals Camp, the school is now located at its permanent facility on Hwy 26 in Collingwood. Opening in September of 2007, the new building has opened many doors for students and the community alike. Facilities include a complete teaching kitchen, SMART Board interactive whiteboards in classrooms, and internet available to all students and staff. Two fully equipped science labs, a music studio with sound dampening, and a growing library have contributed to growth in all academic areas. Built with the future in mind, the new facility will allow for continued expansion for years to come, with a sustained population eventually reaching 300. Students from Pretty River Academy have had high levels of success in all areas. Each of the last several years students have been selected to attend the Canada Wide Science Fair. All high school students are encouraged to participate in the prestigious international Duke of Edinburgh Program, and to date four students have achieved the gold standard. Students also volunteer in a variety of community events and organizations.
