Neill-Wycik first opened its doors to students on August 15, 1970. The initiative to create Neill-Wycik started in 1966 and was spearheaded by Kathy Whalen and a small group of motivated Ryerson students. The goal of the co-op back then was to provide affordable student accommodations and offer a student controlled enviornment in which they could develop. How little things change. These are still the goals that Neill-Wycik has for today! What is a Co-op? You may be asking yourself “What exactly is a co-op?” Well in terms of housing, a co-op is a business model where the residents (also called members) are also the owners. The residents make decisions, vote on by-laws and set the policies that have a direct impact on their lives. Furthermore, the number one goal of a co-op is to serve its members rather than making huge profits. This ensures that the housing charges stay low while the quality of life remains high. Life as a member of the Neill-Wycik Co-op means having fun and getting involved. Neill-Wycik encourages its members to make their mark and leave a lasting impression. By joining one of the Co-op's many committees, members can participate in such diverse tasks as planning social events or developing the building's long term financial goals. Not interested in any of Neill-Wycik’s existing committees? You can always attend a Social Activity Committee meeting and propose your own! In short, there are many opportunities that Neill-Wycik offers its members to get the most out of their time here.
