Keefer Mansion Inn, Thorold, ON

Built by Hugh Keefer 118 years ago, Maplehurst is a Regional landmark. Second only to the home of William Hamilton Merritt, it is the most important residence connected to the development of the Welland Canal and is important to the development of Canada. The Keefer family is considered to be the founding family of Thorold. Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, Maplehurst is located in a dramatic setting with commanding views of downtown Thorold and the Welland Canal. Built of red stone in the Richardsonian Romanesque style significant features include 9, 000 square feet, grand staircase, doors and panelling, eight fireplaces and 12 foot ceilings Operating as a healthcare facility for nearly 80 years, the beautiful building was heavily institutionalized hiding much of its charm behind layers of paint and flooring. In 2006, following 3 years of extensive restoration, the site was transformed into the Keefer Mansion Inn, with main floor public dining and ten suites. The site is located within minutes of Niagara Falls, and Niagara's famous wineries.
