The Royal BC Museum’s mission is to promote an understanding of the living landscapes and cultures of British Columbia and engage people in a dialogue about their future. This commitment, aligned with the UN’s Earth Charter, drives everything we do. To achieve this we: take a leadership role in research and scholarship; develop, preserve and exhibit a world-class collection; and deliver innovative programming and partnerships. We pursue our mission with a focus on six key functions: 1. developing and maintaining a provincial collection of historical material (specimens, artifacts and archives) related to BC; 3. exhibiting material not in our collections that relates to BC’s past and providing an occasional “window on the world” by presenting touring exhibitions from international museums; 4. conducting or assisting in research relating to BC human history and natural history; 5. disseminating information relating to BC’s history, and to the museum and archives and their functions; 6. developing and implementing philanthropy/sponsorship and commercial activities in support of the Royal BC Museum’s key functions. The combination of all these activities enables the Royal BC Museum to fulfill its leadership role and, in particular, to deliver programs and services to the people we serve.
