It wasn't the haircut or colour I had issues with. It was clear the stylist was experienced and knew what she was doing. It was the atmosphere. First of all the salon is very small. Four of us were squeezed into a very small space. I thought it was a mud porch that ppl enter before going into the salon, at first. It's that small. Another client with a cold that I ended up contracting was squeezed into the same small space breathing the same air.j I booked an appt with a woman whose brother (?)(also a hairdresser) seemed to feel entitled to dominate the conversation that he had not been invited into. He was supposed to be working on another client alongside his sister but instead of attending to her he attempted to mansplain & invalidate everything I said. He didn't seem to realize that the service his sister was providing me was part of a business transaction. He seemed to feel I was taking up too much of the oxygen in the small room by talking openly & happily & that I needed to be taken down a peg & that's exactly what he set out to do throughout the entire appt. The level of unprofessionalism was shocking. At one point he actually jumped in to say to me while I was speaking to his sister "how do we know you're not just lying about everything you say? How do we know you're really who you say you are?" Coming from a city like Halifax where nobody knows anybody but we all still manage to have fabulous, happy, boisterous conversations in salons this was horrifying to me. This 'family' salon has to understand that even though they may not be exposed to many people who are different from them it's hardly the fault of paying customers that a) their space is too small and b) they don't have enough exposure to the world. I was happy with the cut & colour but wouldn't return because of the bullying behaviours & the lack of basic courtesy I have come to expect from professionals in the industry. I was hoping to be thanked for giving them my business. Hoping they would recognize the person who referred me but I think it would have been a step too far for them to drop their arrogance and pride & admit to themselves that I had made a contribution to their business - that whether they like it or not people who aren't like them have the right to exist & have rights (just like them) that are protected by law.
