I went to Beta Crux with my three sons and my spouse on a sunny afternoon. Upon arrival, we asked for harnesses (since we had taken the belay course the previous year to be able to secure our children) and then requested the staff to check if we had fastened everything correctly. One of the employees curtly replied, 'You learned that in the course.' I found the comment disrespectful for several reasons. First, the safety of our children is paramount, and we were seeking the advice of a professional. Second, we had not used child harnesses in our course. Finally, in the course, we were advised to always seek the opinion of an expert, which we did. So, on this beautiful sunny afternoon, I felt belittled while trying to have a good time with my family. This is not the first time I've had this feeling when visiting Beta Crux, where novices often feel unwelcome. But I've decided that it will be the last time. One of my children wanted to have their birthday party there. That definitely won't be happening.
