Cornwall is a bustling city located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, just a short hour’s drive from Ottawa and Montreal. It is one of Canada’s oldest communities - first settled in 1784 by United Empire Loyalists. Soon after its settlement, Cornwall made important contributions to the province's growth. Owing to its strategic location, Cornwall served as a garrison town, communications and supply post during the War of 1812. Local residents also had influential roles to play, including John Sandfield MacDonald, who would become the first Premier of the Province of Ontario. Significant chapters in Cornwall's history were written during the latter half of the 19th century as the town emerged as an important industrial centre in Eastern Ontario. New flour, paper and textile mills set up operations, resulting doubling of the town's population to 4, 468 by 1881.
