Our annual operating costs for our SPCA is approximately $170, 000 and we are funded primarily through fundraisers, the generosity of the general public, businesses, donations, adoption fees and a yearly grant of $10.000 from the Department of Natural Resources. We are governed by a Board of Directors, comprised of volunteers, and enjoy the assistance of more than 100 supporters who help with direct animal care and also with our many annual fundraisers which include semi-annual flea markets, bake sales, ticket sales, Christmas tree sales, auctions and Walk for the Animals The Gladys Groves Copeland Animal Shelter, which opened in 1994, is located on Huntley Drive, Clarenville, NL . We have three employees and our shelter is open for animal care 365 days per year. We rely heavily on our fantastic volunteers who cover evening and holiday shifts. We are open to the public all days except statutory holidays. Although we have always been an integral part of enforcement in animal welfare, with changes to the Animal Health and Protection Act, unfortunately the SPCA is no longer an enforcement agency. Our mission is to protect and care for animals that have no other shelter. When possible, we expand our services to include animals whose owners have to relinquish them for one reason or another. We try to spay and neuter as many animals as we can to enhance their adoptability. Our aim is to educate people to treat animals with the respect and love that they deserve and to encourage people to be responsible pet owners.
