How to provide for their family is often the last thought on many of our client's minds before they fall asleep at night, and sadly it's the first thought they awake to in the morning. WINS operates Three Family Resource Centres (FRC's) located in housing complexes throughout the city and centre's within its Dover and MacLeod Plaza stores. Serving as community hubs, the FRC's provide families with barrier free access to essential programs, services and resources that improve and support wellbeing. WINS is an essential resource for vulnerable families! As the situation with COVID -19 continues to evolve day to day in Calgary, Women In Need Society (WINS) assures our referring partners that our primary focus remains the health and safety of our clients, communities we serve and our employees and their well-being. WINS has a plan in place to minimize the potential risk of infection and is working by the recommendations set forwarded by Alberta Health Services

HERE'S WHAT WE DO IN CALGARY: Campus Life. Campus Life is a school-based outreach program that volunteers with school athletic teams, carries out student team-building rallies, and is involved in other activities on and off school campuses. Staff and volunteers mentor youth through sport by challenging and encouraging them to reach their full potential, supporting them in their development, teaching them life skills, and instilling positive values. Gym Blast. Gym Blast is a high energy, jam-packed, fun-filled, 1 ½- 2 hour, morning or afternoon motivational assembly full of games, geared for students from grades 7-12. Gym Blast promotes school spirit, team work and group effort. StreetLight. Our StreetLight program aims to reach youth who are living on the streets or who are involved in human trafficking through mobile drop-in centres in Bowness and in the downtown core, as well as through two 24/7 crisis lines. The program provides a safe environment for these vulnerable youth and facilitates mentorship relationships to help them make positive life changes. Youth Guidance. Our Youth Guidance program provides at-risk and minority youth with mentorship and relational support through facilitating sports events and through a partnership with an open custody home in Bowness. This program helps youth to develop positive values, relational skills, and leadership capabilities. Worth Auto. Worth Auto is an employment-training program in the form of an automotive repair shop for disadvantaged and troubled youth. Many of these youth lack self-worth and have rarely known accomplishment, so Worth Unlimited teaches them practical and valuable skills while inspiring their sense of identity. The goal of the Mental Health Commission of Canada is to help bring into being an integrated mental health system that places people living with mental illness at its centre. To this end, the Commission encourages cooperation and collaboration among governments, mental health service providers, employers, the scientific and research communities, as well as Canadians living with mental illness, their families and caregivers. The organization of publicly funded mental health services and supports to the general population is the responsibility of each provincial and territorial government, not of the Commission. The proposal to create the Mental Health Commission of Canada was first made by the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology in November 2005. Almost two years earlier, in February, 2003, the Committee, under the leadership of Senator Michael Kirby, had undertaken the first-ever national study of mental health, mental illness and addiction. During the final phase of its study, the Committee held more than 50 meetings, comprising more than 130 hours of hearings. The Committee heard from more than 300 witnesses, whose testimony filled more than 2,000 pages. The Committee travelled to every province and territory, and supplemented its public hearings by two separate e-consultations through the committee’s website that gathered hundreds of individual stories. The Government of Canada announced funding for the Mental Health Commission of Canada in its March 2007 budget, and indicated that the mandate and structure of the Commission would be closely based on the proposal contained in the Senate Committee report. The creation of the Commission was also endorsed by all provincial and territorial governments (with the exception of Québec) at a meeting of Ministers of Health in October 2005, and all these governments have since confirmed their support for the Commission.
