The Burnaby Winter Club (BWC) was founded on May 29, 1956 as the Burnaby Curling Club and incorporated under the Societies Act of the Province of British Columbia. On April 18, 1956 the Club changed its name to reflect the multi-sport dynamics of the activities at the time. It became the Burnaby Winter Club and its constitution was amended to include hockey and figure skating. Over more recent years, with the success of the Vancouver Canucks, hockey has become the predominant sport at the Club. Current membership participation is reflected in the interest for premiere hockey development. The Figure Skating Club is a good complement to the hockey program for family members, and is a separate body from the Minor Hockey Association (MHA). Minor hockey and figure skating have their own representation on the Board of Directors. The Club takes pride in the fact that NHL players such as; Jack McIlhargey, Cliff Ronning, Paul Kariya, Chris Joseph, and Glenn Anderson all played their minor hockey out of the Burnaby Winter Club. There are a number of other players that have played at the professional ranks, both in North America, in Europe leagues, and in Russia that compromise a very impressive Alumni group. More recently these include NHL’ers Greg Zanon, Michael Santorelli, Karl Alzner and Ryan Nugent Hopkins. One of the unique aspects of a membership at the Burnaby Winter Club is the many elite members who themselves played their minor hockey at the BWC. There is no greater commendation for the program than when a former participant chooses to bring their offspring to the hockey program. By way of example, this past year Cliff Ronning’s son Ty was on the Bantam A1 hockey team that won the Provincials recently and the Club’s fourth Hockey Canada Western Canadian Bantam Championship.
