Help Support Jessie's House

3 mars 2020

Fleeing domestic violence can be dangerous, scary, and overwhelming.  Jessie's House, a 36 bed emergency shelter is expected to begin sheltering individuals and families fleeing domestic violence.  Currently under construction and expected to begin housing residents this spring, it will be just one of three Alberta shelters to house individuals of any age or gender.  Proudly constructed by individual and private donations, it will be the first to serve the Sturgeon Region, Alexander First Nation, Edmonton Garrison and City of St Albert.

In January 2012, family, friends and community came together to establish a fund, in memory of Jessica Martel, a young mom murdered by her spouse on April 29, 2009.  Co-founded by Lynne Rosychuk, Jessica's mother, the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation (JMMF) set out to raise money to address a nation-wide shortage of emergency shelter beds.

There are a few ways you can help them with their fundraising efforts:

Jessie's house is looking for new donated items for their emergency shelter.  To view items most needed in Jessie's House, please view their registry.  Items may be purchased from any retailer of your choice.

You can purchase your donated items and have them shipped directly to Jessie's house at PO Box 3167, Morinville, AB T8R 1S1 or you can drop your donated items off at Riel Park RV & Self Storage during regular business hours.

To supply Jessie's House with furnishings and other in kind donations you can call 780-939-5289 or visit their website.

Win a vintage chopper and help others break free from domestic violence.

Raffle tickets are available to win a showroom quality chopper, by American IronHorse, features an S&S 124" polished engine, is 9.5 feet long and valued at $38,000. With only 1500 tickets printed, the race is on to get your hands on this gorgeous ride and open the doors to Albert's newest emergency shelter.

You can purchase a ticket by stopping by Riel Park RV & Self Storage or by calling the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation at 780-939-5289.

Have items to donate?  Bring your gently used items to Riel Park RV & Self Storage.  Donated items will be placed in a self storage unit and auctioned off with proceeds supporting the St. Albert Merchants and Jesse's House.  Donated items can be dropped off at 7 Riel Drive (subject to approval).

The Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation hosts other events such as the Break Free & Bloom Gala, Country Cabaret and Memorial Run.   Help support these fantastic events and help the JMMF with their fundraising efforts.

The Jessica Martel Foundation is also always looking for people to volunteer and help out by being a community ambassador, help with fundraising events, or third party fundraising.

When people think of domestic violence, they often think of physical abuse that leaves obvious signs, such as cuts and bruises.  In fact, domestic violence takes many forms and may leave no physical signs at all.  Many abusive relationships are characterized by more than one type of abusive behaviour.  The behaviours often change over time.

Until all homes are safe, we'll have Jessie's House.
